“Prospect Cottage, at the fifth quarter of the globe.
After three days and nights the wind dropped
and a full moon appeared out of a silver sea
at 5.30 on a cold January night. I walked through
the glass doors and held this up to the sky
so that the moon and stars shone through between the
the bands of grey cloud. Shut your eyes for a moment
and dream of the moon on the white shingles, of your shadow,
behind you Dungeness A & B nuclear power stations twinkling
and humming like the emerald city. Off the lighthouse
that turns ceaselessy illuminating you every 10 seconds.
Off the sound of the sea”.
Derek
I developed a close friendship with the film-maker, writer and painter Derek Jarman around 1991 and visited him several times at Prospect cottage in Dungeness.
This painting with its lyrical and moving poem etched into glass illuminates Derek’s deep affection for Dungeness and Prospect Cottage. It was there that he created his now famous garden and I became one of his many helpers lugging heavy stones from the sea’s edge. I was deeply touched when shortly before he died he enabled me to buy this painting. Derek Jarman was a man of enormous charm, enthusiasm and generosity and it was he who encouraged me to follow my dream and open an art gallery.
