Nick Hais

I enjoy the brilliance of rich and vibrant light which, when reflected, creates living shadows.

I use this quality as it relates to objects and scenes that display inherent geometries, such as buildings, boats, tables and chairs. These subject-matters provide the opportunity to utilise formal visual elements of line, shape and colour in combination, which become the focus of attention in the process of painting. Built up in layers of thin paint my paintings become carefully structured compositions. Because my way of painting requires a degree of precision and accuracy in order to achieve pictorial clarity, the work develops slowly. This slow process gives time to evaluate the creative decisions I make and these decisions are determined by a quest for my paintings to inhabit a pictorial space where the figurative meets the non-figurative.
