Martin Webb

My work contemplates fundamental things such as our basic need to provide for ourselves; our desire for home, belonging, and connection; and our being a small temporary part of the natural world’s continuum. These thoughts take shape in images and objects that combine simple representations, layered abstractions, and plain-spoken materials. For some time now I’ve used the recurring motifs of boats, houses, and travelers, to reflect on life’s journeys, arrivals, and moorings. When I was a young art student, most of my teachers had been raised on Britain’s post-war modernism, and even though this wasn’t fashionable at that time, the influence permeated through to my sensibilities. I’ve come to recognize the huge influence this has on my work, especially the St Ives school and the it’s associated artists. The mix of abstraction and representation, the design sense, and the interest in the natural world and our relationship to it, have all become through-lines between Cornwall’s art heritage and my own contemporary work.
